COMMUNITY LED TOTAL SANITATION (CLTS) QUALITY ASSURANCE
The Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation through the State Department for Water and Sanitation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health under the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, has carried out Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) Quality Assurance across eight counties in August 2025. The counties covered include Baringo, Samburu, Mandera, Kwale, Makueni, Bomet, Migori, and West Pokot.
This exercise forms part of the implementation of the Kenya Water Sanitation and Hygiene (K-WASH) Programme and directly contributes to the achievement of Disbursement Linked Indicator (DLI) 5.1. Encouragingly, the communities have demonstrated significant behavior change, particularly in the construction and consistent use of toilets and latrines. Many of these facilities now meet the Open Defecation Free (ODF) non-negotiable standards, which include providing privacy, having a squat hole cover, a cleanable toilet floor, and a handwashing station equipped with both water and soap placed next to the facility.
Through these efforts, the K-WASH Programme continues to enhance public health and dignity in communities, moving Kenya closer to its sanitation and hygiene goals.
