In a decisive move toward achieving an Open Defecation Free (ODF) status, Makueni County today successfully concluded a high-impact training session on Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS). The final day of the workshop focused on cementing the roles of implementers and Village Sanitation Committees (VSCs) under the Kenya Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (K-WASH) framework. The training clarified the distinct yet complementary roles of key stakeholders. CLTS Implementers were tasked with the critical "triggering" process—igniting community-wide behavioral change—while Village Sanitation Committees (VSCs) were empowered as the frontline guardians of progress. The VSCs will now lead social mapping efforts, monitor latrine construction, and enforce community-developed hygiene bylaws. A central pillar of the session was the K-WASH overview, which highlighted the program's objective: providing sustainable, inclusive access to water and sanitation. Participants explored the operational context of Makueni, discussing how to adapt sanitation technologies to the county’s unique geography and ensure that no vulnerable household is left behind on the sanitation ladder. The afternoon session transitioned from theory to practice with a rigorous post-test and training evaluation.
