A New Dawn for Kenya’s Water Sector: WUCC Cohort 2 Officially Launches in Nairobi

NAIROBI, KENYA — The journey toward financially resilient and self-sustaining water utilities took a significant step forward today with the official launch of the Water Utility Creditworthiness Course (WUCC) Cohort 2. The event brought together key stakeholders from across Kenya’s water sector, including representatives from WASREB, WASPA, WaterFund, the World Bank, and the State Department for Water and Sanitation, underscoring a shared commitment to transforming the financing and management of water services nationwide. The day commenced with inspiring opening remarks from sector leaders. Acting CEO Richard emphasized the critical role of financial sustainability in strengthening water service delivery and improving operational performance across utilities. County representatives and the Task Team Leader (TTL) of K-WASH shared insights into the program’s vision, highlighting the importance of building institutional capacity to support long-term sector growth. The afternoon sessions shifted focus from strategy to implementation. Facilitated by WASREB, participants engaged in technical onboarding and cohort-setting activities designed to equip them with practical tools, resources, and guidance for the learning journey ahead. These sessions laid a strong foundation for collaboration, knowledge sharing, and the successful delivery of the program’s objectives. The landmark event concluded with closing remarks and a vote of thanks from representatives of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation and participating county governments. As attendees departed, there was a palpable sense of optimism, purpose, and commitment to the transformative agenda ahead. With Cohort 2 now officially underway, Kenya’s water sector is moving closer to a future where water utilities are not only effective service providers but also financially robust institutions capable of attracting investment, driving sustainable development, and delivering lasting impact to communities across the country.
